I think to most Chinese that is equivalent to a declaration of war.

Hmm, I think a direct invasion to Taiwan would have majority Chinese support. It would push Chinese people closer to their government which I am guessing is not the original intention. Chinese army is a lot stronger now, US is not guaranteed to win near Chinese shore.

Few years ago is night and day for China. 20 years ago US would easily steam roll China. Right now? Not so much. A proxy war at Taiwan gives China a lot of advantage since their land based missiles are in range.

China has poured the vast majority of its military efforts into home defense and regional hegemony. It's their backyard. Chinese unit costs for missiles and lasers of almost comparable quality to U.S. armaments are about an order of magnitude lower. And just... why?

Unfortunate as it may be, the Chinese Communists won a war for control of the mainland many decades ago. The rump government fled to Formosa. The PRC gradually consolidated power over the region, absorbing peripheral satellites and disputed territories. This is not our fight.

It would be almost as if the Soviet Union attempted to fight the United States over Puerto Rico.
