I imagine the way this invasion would have to be stopped would be the United States being willing to lose a ton of ships and planes as they take missile hits while they obliterate transports and merchant shipping

That's true, we have a lot of submarines. My educated guess is they have enough ASW capacity that we'd still take quite a few losses with it

The range of Chinese ballistic missiles is pretty long IIRC, but of course they probably get much less effective near the end of their range because of the opportunities to dodge and the strain on the kill chain
