Must counterfactual harder. Good revolutions are the result of the pent up desire to create. Revolutions - even ones like the Russian one - only look bad if you assume the neoliberal default "it all kinda works out if you leave it alone"

How many first world states had bloody civil wars and rebellions on the way up? How can we measure the value of revolution now vs. later? How many countries slid into stagnant decay and then were eaten by external political trends and forces?

For all my complaints I think state secession would be a bad idea for the most part. Our dividing lines are not neat and secession risks the kind of constant internal struggle that makes people feel a sense of pity for those poor, backwards Californians.
