That's kind of it, geting it right required not so much epidemology skills than a "softer" assessment based on available data (OSINT like what u did). For me the real failure was not having epidemologist properly interact with people able to extract the data (eg intel). Also...

Sorry for the delay, I just read that "nowcasting" thing cleaning my tabs You (and him) got a point but I feel he's overselling the term a bit. He just pleads more ressource to analyse the data instead of fancy models cauz they rely on outdated indicators in the information age?
