Yeah, I think it's not necessarily true based on the physics, because there might be other effects of wearing masks - but it's hard to believe that they'd outweigh the benefits or that those risks can't easily be minimised by good communication on how to wear a mask properly

I gave two. And also the world is full of unknown side effects that were not plausible before we discovered them. Epistemology doesn't go out the window during an emergency; decisions change, but beliefs shouldn't. Modesty is still correct.

https://twitter.com/AlexGodofsky/status/1245952217363996673 … moral hazard (i.e. people with masks decide to congregate more in ways that outweigh the benefits of the mask) and causing people to touch their face

I don't trust any existing RCTs to really be useful, but I also don't think "masks work" should be taken as obviously true based on the physics of masks. I think it's probably true? But it's easy to think of ways it might not be true (moral hazard, makes you touch your face, w/e)

if you want to scratch this Itch at length you can precisely define both terms and explain in detail to everyone how theyre different and make some assertions about why it matters even a little bit for the discussion at hand 😃

because of the negative externality involved moral hazard is both technically correct as well as being informally fine
