The Fussell observation I may be misremembering, that there are times when the masses ape the umc, or at least aspire to solid respectability (and presumably classic/"classy" tastes), and times when the masses seek to be mass, just with more money and fame. Or was that Murray?

I'm oversimplifying both decades for sure, and there were great and wonderful things done in the 90s, but I felt pangs of nostalgia for an America that stood up straighter, so to speak.
