Yes, the grassroots (I include myself) tend to be a bit at variance with the parliamentary party. The last party meeting I went to, people strongly wanted a No Deal Brexit. There's a bit of a difference between that and the party line in Westminster.
Yeah, that's pretty typical in Canada and most parliamentary systems with first past the post. I think my ideal world still has leaders elected by the party at large, but MPs can still remove leaders and the leader has less authority to bar candidates from the party.
Yessir, it's been a developing that way in most anglo countries. The argument for a general party wide vote is all members should have a say and be involved in shaping policy, however that removes the threat of removal by MPs and tends to centralise power to the party leader.
