I'm torn many examples of "evil price gouging" are natural and Good, eg hotel surge pricing around Florida in hurricane season On the other I'm not sure buying all the hand sanitizer in your town to resell on Amazon for profit should go unpunished
-
The problem with the latter isn't the gouging, granted It's depleting a local resource in a time of crisis for profit (unlike gouging, which is actually keeping it available) I'm not an economist but surely there's some daylight?

might be just to protect themselves since ""price gouging" during a state of emergency is illegal in a bunch of states

Maybe the Chinese model is for once a valid source of inspiration and folks should sell a package deal of one cheap book and a complimentary bottle of purell for 50 bucks

This is different than “gas station gouging water to ration it”. This is mostly “morons buy up all the sanitizer from companies that have actual distribution networks, attempt to ship it out individually via USPS”. It’s very doubtful that this better allocates/rations goods
-
higher prices from the normal distribution networks would have prevented this
