I don't know, the status quo seemed to double down after 9/11. A professional military went and did the dirty work with long wars of such low intensity that people essentially forgot they existed while at home consumerism took off more than ever

9/11 was the first time in a very long time that the country felt vulnerable in some sense, but this is the first time since the Vietnam War that the country has had to truly own that vulnerability
