I'm not sure what James means here, but it feels more like we're drifting back toward history than anything, and that 1945-2015 was a weird suspension of historical gravity.

By "history" I mean a somewhat harsh multipolar world in which big bloody upheavals of all kinds are not that rare, and in which liberal democracy is once more a besieged underdog amongst numerous authoritarian rivals.

Strong disagree. Things will get weird for like 2 months, but people will barely remember what happened by 2021. Only lasting legacy will be emergency preparedness measures and increased global coordination amongst govts imo
