it's to prevent people from going uncovered without penalty until they need substantial medical care, then signing up the moment they learn they're going to need to make some major outlays

we should simply inform our lawmakers that everyone needs substantial medical care at some point, and that perhaps we could find another way to share this burden

a single-payer set up comes with its own massive challenges even apart from cost :/ ultimately in such situations the outcome is rationing by means other than price, typically queues and uncovered procedures medical staff would also not take the necessary pay cuts sitting down

this is just a really difficult problem given all of the things people want at once

more than anything else i want a system everyone can use without fear of going bankrupt. i feel like we already have rationing, it just has a cliff (non-insured) instead of a queue

@asymmetricinfo had a plan that handled something approximating this iirc You can set up a feasible scheme to handle major cases that cause bankruptcy, but typically at the cost of paying more out of pocket for smaller problems think fairly high deductibles2 replies 0 retweets 2 likes -

why, though? why not pay for everything?

Because we literally cannot afford to provide world class medical coverage to everyone at all times, basically It's a scarce resource and it's going to be rationed somehow You can ration by price, by queues, or by pull but not everyone is going to get everything at all time

put more money into the system, then. defund the military. tax the fuck out of the rich. make it illegal for the president to go golfing. there's money everywhere except for this

There is not enough money for this
We already spend more public funds on medicine than the military and military is all up something like 25% of the federal budget, to say nothing of state and local expenditures
