I'm not defending China response covid19 but I don't think the leaders in China today resemble those during the leap period.

causes of the famines were approximately the same. civic servants would be so severely punished for missing production targets that they just lied and said they made their targets when they didn't, this cascaded across the system.

the authoritarian bureaucracy and "face saving" culture has lead to tragic failures with this same pattern over and over again throughout the history of China. this time is no different. they're lying to save face. it's how they do.
