Can you explain? That's a very unexpected conclusion for me.

Overthinking is primarily a response to a situations that are important, uncertain, and not fully understood. Avoiding those scenarios and sticking to comfortable low risk well understood terrain is the easiest way to avoid overthinking and is a form of risk aversion.

Somewhat related: I've just created a poll about flipping a coin to make decisions. It's a funny coincidence, because I opened Twitter to make this poll, so it was not prompted by your discussion.https://twitter.com/BonbonFork/status/1232236357671628801?s=19 …

Suppose you need to make some decision, say between A and B. It has some importance, but this choice is not expected to matter much in say, a month. You spent some time thinking and see approx. equal upsides and downsides to A and B. flipping a coin to decide between A and B is:

The poll comes from a discussion that I had just today. I said that I sometimes flip a coin to make relatively small decisions. The other party replied that it's probably harmful to me because I'm delegating authority to the coin/fate/whatev. & it degrades my dec-making capacity.

The ideal is certainly to be able to pick at random without using the coin, but humans are bad at that, and if you can't make your own entropy store bought is fine.

The ideal is knowing what to do without needing to flip, perhaps by having your preferences completely mapped and self-legible 😃

There's a nice short story collection with more: https://ia800103.us.archive.org/25/items/ScottAlexanderStories2017/ScottAlexanderStories2017.pdf … Some very nice stories! Written by Scott Alexander, but collected by somebody else. And of course there's Unsong, which you probably already know.
