think it’s a combo of a degrading glue formulation & a peculiar paper but books from the late 30s-50s have a particular, wonderful smell

Huh. Not one of the varieties I've catalogued in book smells. I don't actually consider myself to have a strong sense of smell, so it's possible that I've missed this, or perhaps you're just noticing a rather light must?
