Just as an isolated data point, none of my friends or family members who actually work in health care and know things about virus transmission and impacts are the least bit concerned about the coronavirus becoming some kind of killer epidemic in the US.

At-risk populations are at-risk as they would be for any outbreak like this, but if you're reasonably healthy with no complications it'll come and go and not be that big of a deal

what? no. it's definitely worse for older, less healthy people, but plenty of people in good health have died from this every estimate of mortality rate I've seen suggests at least an order of magnitude worse than flu
