(and ofc. this doesn't count as "inflation" bc of the way that's reckoned)

Yeah, inflation can be kind of a clusterfuck as is and weird places like health care make it worse.

I'd pull this around in 4 parts A. Labor composition has changed, doesn't make sense to compare without addressing that B. Many items have gotten better but more costly also have downmarket equivalents to the 1985 version that are cheaper than before (cont)

C. Some items have gotten a better quality/price ratio as the price went up with no substitutes BUT this can crowd out other spending making you feel more precarious or paradoxically worse off D. Some items just got more costly period

yup. I think C is a big deal. Often you just need the Minimum Viable X, but buying some X is non-negotiable. (A car, insulin...) If the cheapest available X is more expensive, you may well be paying for extra quality you don't actually want.

I'd put cars in B; even with the hell of a dealership system the market is pretty big and healthy. Healthcare definitely fits in C, Housing can be C and D depending, College is D (arguably even the secret E where the premium has decreased over time)

I think we've basically solved transportation costs looking at the chart; gas prices are basically stable. Healthcare and Housing are fundamentally political question rather than technical ones, maybe treat college's admin bloat as a quality increase to reign in?

College is shit and needs to die. I'd be basically in favor of banning employers from considering degrees in hiring. Housing is a whole separate issue, where people now pay money to get away from undesirables since all more direct methods are illegal. Hard problem.

I think you forcibly legalize building complexes and much of that solves itself; land gets pricier, people sell it for money, big stuff gets built on it. Let them flee, the market always collects in the end. If you end up with the rich commuting from exurbs I think that's a win
