Retweets follow power law, meaning top end skews mean (average) away from mode (typical). Men also take more risks, and display more variance, so the high end is slightly more male (so is bottom, but you can't fall off the floor). Power law then expands that variance on average.

Not 100% on my math, but pretty confident. Average is probably the worst statistical transformation in the world, so of course it's also the standard everyone uses.
