If that happened today, the GOP would have a very good case for regulating Google.

Google didn't fix it. They knew it was a shitty political trick to fuck with voters by giving them disinformation and they just let it sit there. For YEARS.

Google has rules that are basically like "If you fuck with our search results, we will ban your site from our results." They used that as an excuse to ban conservative sites back in 2006 and it was totally legit. Now, the double standard would be too much to bear politically

If a conservative group ran a campaign to take the top spot on a search for Biden's name and they sent people to a site claiming Biden was doing blow on pregnant hookers, I have no doubt the Dems would go nuclear. There's no way Google would let that stand.

At the *very* least, it's Google allowing themselves to be used b/c they don't particularly object to the goals of the people using them. There is no way to justify that sabotaging Santorum's search results was in the best interest of their users searching the term.

I have talked myself into being very passionate about this very specific thing, so I apologize for that.

It's weird b/c it all seemed so innocuous at the time. No one cared about Santorum (I didn't) and the Google algorithm seemed, in our innocence, more like a force of nature. Now we know it obviously is not. BUT They can't be transparent b/c that makes them easier to screw with

I do not think they would let that stand today. It was a different world back then.
