What's the goal? It's often a great experience but unless you have an outcome in mind you might end up setting a pile of money on fire If you just need compute I've got a workstation I'm not much using you're welcome to remote into

you'll probably not end up saving money unless you have some hyper - specialized purpose in mind - building little file server with a raspberrypi can be a good cheap learning experience / project

I think it depends! I don't think I'd ever buy preassembled again personally There is something beautiful about fitting everything together yourself and knowing how the guts are connected (because you put them there)
