There's a garden bot that plants, waters, and weeds it automagically. It looks pretty rad, but it's not cheap. This stuff in the video you linked doesn't look good, though, we should be moving away from industrialized farming.

There are automated weeders already - if you plant your crop to a spec, you can just turn over soil where your plant isn't. Very simple machines. Harvesting is probably the most interesting area, but some crops (like strawberries) are challenging - the robots perform poorly.

A lot of crops - like feed corn - are already essentially automated. GPS driven, auto steered autopilot. The human just rides along to troubleshoot mechanical failures when needed (and is needed a lot).

That’s basically the idea, yeah. Once they get amnesty and can demand American salary and benefits, the cost equation very quickly flips toward machines...

I think the history of conventional vs Amish / Mennonite farming is instructive. It seems many times new farming technology leads to more debt for the former making a more brittle financial situation while the latter seem to often be out competing long term esp marginal land.

wonder if it would be economical if farmers couldn’t off-load the externalities of the way it's being done now onto the wider community reading sti hanson, it seems to be quite spectacular in e.g. cali

For all intents and purposes, field farming is already automated. Orchard, less so. Farm labor isn’t a huge source of labor demand. Unskilled labor in the US gets as much as it does because it doesn’t have to compete with unskilled labor in ___________.
