the main thing is that there's a lot of variation across teams at each of those companies in terms of QOL and politics, just a ton of variation
also across job classes
overall hunch is Politics is steeply on the decline from wherever it started, too

Amazon’s political-ness depends on the role but the workaholic-ness is real Most of my friends who still work there discuss it terms of enduring it But they are VERY well compensated for their effort

The friends I know and talk to who are still there have been there since I worked there... so their stock grants have grown from $130ish to $1800ish per share and most of them have held, those clever kids

It’s also a trap though... hard to find a new job when you’re making $400k/yr and a ton more tied up in golden handcuffs Massive psychological trap no matter how unhappy your work might make you But long timers build coping mechanisms and learn to deal

holding was a terrible idea ex ante! if many managers did this I respect Amazon less

I cashed out my first year for liquidity and both cheer and deeply regret that decision. I wouldn't have a mortgage right now if I hadn't done that. But liquidity. Then I vested as it went $400 to $1200, HODLed until I needed a down payment and cashed out half.

And then it went to $1800 and le sigh. /Probably going to sell a third sometime in 2020 and pay off just enough to get to a 15-year.

The anti-Amazon argument today is that Bezos is clearly leaving. OTOH, Alphabet, MSFT, and Apple did good things after their founders left. Or died.

He's slowly checking out. Blue Origin, his divorce, the phone hack... He's a busy man.

He hit level 70, maxed out his gear level, and now he’s getting tired of running dailies
