the startup costs for decent quality plastic molds are insane, and minis are a pretty niche product sprues for 40k minis have to be in the six figures

but honestly i dunno how much id recommend painting models for dnd? until youve got some experience its gonna be a few hours per model for how much payoff? how many times will your players fight that dragon? for a centerpiece monster or bbeg sure, or just for the joy of it sure

What do you need the minis for? Some lines are really that expensive, especially metal minis. But if you can get away with cheaper ones you should. (e.g. if you are ok with a bit less detail and aren’t looking specifically for 40K minis or something you can probably do better.)
