Melatonin is more of a short term, "need to go to sleep asap" solution. Tryptophan, melatonin's precursor aminoacid, is much better for long term sleep quality. With it sleepyness comes with a more natural feel and it takes a lot more time for you to develop tolerance to it.

I used to take 10mg of melatonin before bed, switched to 200mg of tryptophan and it's just so much better.
