I love having people come visit NYC and I hate spending $300 on Uber in less than 2 days because they refuse to get on the f8cking subway. Because scary black people. WE'RE IN MANHATTAN NOT CANARSIE. IT'S FINE.

Yes. some out of towners are subway averse. some plead 'because safety', but that stopped making any sense by the late 90s. its ludicrous today. I think its more-likely some had bad experience once getting on uptown instead of downtown and had panic attack. Or claustrophobia

To be fair, a bunch of them are from SF, where the stations are full of homeless bums and the trains are full of homeless bums and the streets... And a bunch of the rest literally got mugged and/or arsoned out of Detroit back in the bad old days.

My brother almost got slapped by my mom when he once muttered, while on the Atlanta subway, "this is their territory". "You are not the child I raised."

He wasn't afraid of being hurt or robbed. He felt embarrassed, like he was trespassing in someone's house.
