A fun less well-known fact is also military engineering related. Caesar was beseiging the last Gallic king Vercingetorix inside the capitol oppidum of Alesia. He built a wall around the entire city to prevent attempts to break out of the encirclement. However . . .

Vercingetorix had a relief army coming to break the seige. Its size should have been enough to break Caesar's legion when combined with the beseiged troops and citizens.

Caesar got word of its approach, and before it arrived his troops managed to build a *second* totally encircling wall around the first to defend themselves against the relif force.

When the relief arrived they couldn't surmount Caesar's outer wall; and Vercingetorix couldn't break through the inner wall. Ultimately Vercingetorix surrendered himself when the city was on the verge of total starvation, and Gaul was conquered.

Roman history is full of these engineering-based victories. It's really hard to overstate how incredibly good the legions were at their height, for many reasons but most remarkably for their ability to build quickly and everywhere.
