was greek as widespread? from what i remember, latin was the empire's commom language and greek was kept as a pet because the romans were filthy greekaboos

Greek might have been more widespread than Latin, since it was widely spoken in the Eastern, possibly more populated half. But it was used alongside numerous local languages and got displaced by Arabic as lingua franca

it's probably because it isn't very relevant to my major (german), we only get very basic classical latin and greek also because it's brazil and for some reason we don't know shit about anywhere beyond basic evropa
