why did latin beget so many daughter languages and greek so few, considering how widespread the latter was in the roman empire? or did it and I'm even more clueless than i thought? @erin_nerung, @eigenrobot?

Greek might have been more widespread than Latin, since it was widely spoken in the Eastern, possibly more populated half. But it was used alongside numerous local languages and got displaced by Arabic as lingua franca

kinda disappointed i learned none of that over my grad years, as far as my classes were concerned the eastern may as well not exist at all

Rather bizarre, since a significant amount of our knowledge of the Empire comes from papyri found in Egyptian garbage piles

it's probably because it isn't very relevant to my major (german), we only get very basic classical latin and greek also because it's brazil and for some reason we don't know shit about anywhere beyond basic evropa

i prefer the term "pleb" you'd be surprised by how big a difference having a relatively large % of the pop with (proper) higher education makes
