It's also legitimately hard for someone to determine from the outside in my view. Part of my sister's motivation was a high school stats teacher claiming she had plateaued. She ultimately earned a PhD in physics after a 4.0 undergrad double in math and physics.

I rail against IQ obsessives, but don't know why it has to be such a trigger word. In context, he's clearly saying he infers intelligence from what people can do, not vice versa. AFAIK all the problematics come from the vice versa.

If you say "I know that person can accomplish amazing things because I think they've got a high IQ, which I believe bc they can do amazing things", you may be overestimating their IQ score, but since the IQ term cancels out in the equation, your circular conclusion's pretty safe.
