Maybe buying the Benz at $390/month when a student was indicative of his business acumen? Where I come from, $200k/year is rich. He spent too much, didn't manage expenses and still doesn't. Should we provide free capital to those starting a business?

Sure, the Benz was dumb but not outrageous. I just bought a used Honda Civic and the payment is 400/m at 3% Really a drop in the bucket compared to the rest

$300-400/mo is pretty much table stakes for a car payment, unless you are getting a shitbox lease or buying some wreck used - and the supply of $2000 beaters is not what it once was.

I bought a Corolla from Hertz for $10,000, drove it fifteen years, 180,000 miles. It did everything a Benz does, got 28 MPG (less gas), lower maintenance & insurance. Lower prestige. Some of y'all are making a lot of money. Most of us don't and we don't need prestige.

I mean we traded in the previous car when we bought It was a fifteen year old Taurus that was falling apart, we got a dollar for it Expect to get as much mileage out of the Civic

its not a prestige car, I mostly cared about (i) safety because the thought of Selene dying ruins me, (ii) reliability and durability to minimize lifetime cost, (iii) actually that's it think i paid a slight premium for (i) and (ii) short run but it doesnt feel ostentatious

getting a flash car seems low status to me at this point, I think it may have been for some time Fussell discussed this
