Actually think I might have figured out the nature of the fallacy: In any given paradigm it would indeed be wrong for me to tell the people practicing it that I know better WRT the paradigm. But that isn't the same thing as questioning how the paradigm interfaces with reality.

If I waltz into a differential equations class and contradict the professor it'd be like if I entered a soccer game and started insisting that there were 2-pointers and 3-pointers, so of course they'll say "you can't play until you learn the rules now fuck off"

Mathematical modeling is itself such a game where ostensibly successful prediction of some phenomena is the condition of verification, but given the timescale of climate change the prediction of how the climate changes is not the basis of the feedback loop.

Instead that's the selling point of what the game signifies, in the same way that technological breakthroughs are a selling point for getting people to support math and/or physics. But while those things certainly take time to bear fruit, there's a very long history of successes.

I've come to find the phrase "IYI" annoying, but it does describe a certain class of genuinely smart people: people who are extremely clever who lack the metacognition to understand that their cleverness doesn't automatically grant them relevance.

So instead of trying to figure out why what they're saying doesn't quite stick, the huff and puff about how if only it weren't for the proles they'd be able to change things. Sounds a lot like when you can't get laid but you're so smart and nice... maybe I shouldn't go there

That last comment was not directed at your sex life, the metaphor was a bit poorly executed. I was just trying to explain that demonstrating relevance requires more than insisting that one has certain qualities
