I think one was a matter of looking professional and committed (showing respect for the boss and clients), and the other was a matter of not creating animosity among the early birds (i.e. everyone else).

It's not a coincidence that these were associate level. A very hierarchical arrangement that works for deal teams. The boss showed up whenever, but there was just one of him, and he probably spent the morning on the phone with the powerful buddies he'd cultivated for years.
