Hmm Was the war in Afghanistan a mistake? Did you support it at the time?

iraq actually went better than afghanistan, it is very frustrating how poorly understood this is
-
(part of this is that by the end in Iraq we were doing something completely different than what we set out to do)

I figure there was a decent case for a punitive expedition, we just had no reason to go nation-building afterward if we'd been out and done in a year, I would probably not have any quibble even in hindsight
-
Agreed, and that was my vote, too. There was a reason to show up and make it clear that harboring terrorists carries a heavy cost. Everything that happened after that was a combination of bad ideas, bad execution, and resources being diverted to Iraq.

Striking against the Taliban was not a mistake, but numerous mistakes were made in the aftermath and occupation. (In my opinion)

We had to try. 18 years is a bit long to figure out that you failed. And in many ways... there was no second 9/11. San Bernardino, etc, etc is bad, but it does not shut down the country for a week. 10, not 3,000.

The second 9/11 was all the combat deaths the US had over there. If we had stuck to the initial CIA operator / proxy war style we had for about the first month of the Afghanistan war, I think it would have gone a lot better. But that wasn't telegenic enough.
