hunch is that the Internet or any other organization will ultimately be no better than the social group participating in it (creating it as an ongoing concern?) and the quality of those people is an important input gatekeeping is often good and necessary if you want a community

competency and interest thresholds for use are a very good filter, but if an (open) community becomes socially important those will be overcome see the Internet, see universities, see the coding profession as a culture
