this feels pretty abstract to me still. what are some ways of interacting that you don't know how to do, and do you have any insight into why you can't manage them?

Well a part of what feels like the problem is I don't really know what I don't know how to do. What I can do is opine about Issues and Subject Matter like philosophy and various media, argue, explain/lecture about my Ideas and my math research.

That's fine! And actually--maybe a better (stupid but good) example are sitcoms. When you watch the Simpsons, do the conversations make sense to you? Like, why people would have them, or why they're funny

I find them funny, and at least have a shallow sense of "why". I feel like there is a certain level of making sense that I probably don't get? (...)

My idea is maybe you tend to use conversations for purposes that are immediately practical ("where should we eat", "how does that math work") while most conversations are useful only socially. Does that resonate?

Kinda. Also the dreaded "how do I make this person believe the Right Things". Also "allow me to gift you with my Rare and Profound Ideas and Opinions". I'm not sure what "socially useful" even means and this fact feels like a good way of framing my original question

this is tough to grapple with for me because at this point it's past intuitive I think at a high level maybe conversations are about playing with and often meeting social and emotional needs

practically speaking, as a contingent fact about atomized culture, the only thing anyone is ever doing in a social conversation is asking questions like "do you like me? do you want to connect with me? do you love me? do you want to play with me? can i trust you?"

oh no this feels truer than I would like do you think it's atomization, or neuroticism, or--- naw it's atomization (or just our actual steady rate) crap either way
