This is so unfortunate
. I remember assuming guys wouldn’t actually be okay with me not having a money-making job once upon a time.
Though random college discussions with friends about our desired futures partly cleared this up.

you're not wrong as postulated, but I don't think it will happen until the potential gains at stake *in status terms* are large. those people also have money and only 1 or 2 kids. private is a no-brainer.

I don't think it is actually a defection though; remember that under the current setup, whether public or private the 90-95th percentile can buy schools of desired quality

A bizarro world sort of version of this happened in the 80s and 90s within some splinters of American Protestantism, which is why homeschooling has the fundie rep it does -- UMC fundies got mad ingroup status points for big brood homeschooling
