Theres a kind of magical thinking by which standard free speech arguments somehow no longer apply once I break into someones house nude in the middle of the night and block their exits while holding forth on my theories of sombrerotropian ethicshttps://twitter.com/jttiehen/status/1209574458765250560 …

The obvious reply is breaking into someone’s house nude is a criminal activity, but no one has ever suggested then students engaged in an illegal activity—it was purely free speech (which is compatible with having moral objections to it)...

Some others in my thread have suggested that the students were inciting a mob or some such. That’s okay if it’s just meant as a melodramatic metaphor for how much people dislike the free speech students were engaged in. But if we’re keeping things literal and narrow...

It was obviously nowhere near inciting a mob in any legal sense. So, connecting this to the original Dreger tweet: yes, he’s a bad messenger for the claim we shouldn’t punish people for their controversial but free speech, since that is exactly what he demanded that we do.

Ok so if I understand you: If someone is breaking a set of rules unrelated to speech when delivering speech they should always get murked If they're not they should be able to say what they like without punishment Y/n?

What rules were violated here? (There weren’t any. But if they were, such rules inevitably would be in tension with free speech.)

Hm Most places I have worked or studied I would be kicked out or fired for screaming at someone 🤔 There are real standards for behavioral discourse that exist in professional settings

Well, as I often note, there is more free speech on college campuses than there is in the business world. Sure, if you yell at your boss you’ll be fired. But the situation on college campuses is completely different—students have true free speech while employees don’t.
