I think this is why I feel...not just annoyed, but *hurt* by poorly-executed secular rituals like the solstice this weekend like! c'mon people! are you even proud of what you've built?!https://twitter.com/selentelechia/status/1209400367789658115 …

everyone at solstice held it so awkwardly, like they were afraid to be caught acting too culty, too pleased with themselves, too at home in a church basement with potluck food of varying quality they acted so distant from what they were trying to do

I saw grown men weep openly, on a regular basis, growing up in church I saw people get *possessed* by their faith we weren't even fucking pentacostals! but we'd *feel* in public and come down from the high to comforting, mundane social rituals

like yeah okay there were some open displays of emotionality at solstice but it wasn't the thing whatever the thing is that I can't articulate failed sacredness

Consider the religious backgrounds of the individuals - is it possible they successfully recreated a ritual of reform/progressive judaism, where the sense is more "we do this because this is what we do" than some kind of intense spiritual experience?

The vibe I got (in London) was like "all the students who didn't go home for Christmas have an Xmas mass together". Everyone knows what it's meant to be like and they do their part, but there are no real adults in the room (and also no children)
