Wonder what the explanation is for the decline in membership of associations like Elks, Rotary etc. Maybe I'm way off, and they're doing fine, but anecdotally they seem way less visible than they were 20 years ago, & basically things for 80-somethings to do to keep busy

Last I heard the trend was still downward BUT there were pockets of revival where young folk looking to build local communities had found this existing infrastructure and the local rotary/elks/etc chapter became bimodal: mostly retirees but also a grip of 20-30yo new members.

An institution won't come to your funeral but it won't make difference to you, will it? It might make difference to your loved ones that you leave behind. Isn't a better question: will an institution help you in a time of need? (Maybe it's a worse q., I'm genuinely wondering)

Which maybe is why lots of people find meaning through pop culture in the absence of strong interpersonal relationships and communal identities.
