I frequently hear male PIs say they contribute to diversity and inclusion as evidenced by the large fraction of females in their lab. Let's evaluate the strength of that argument: Brett Kavanaugh has all female law clerks. Do you get it now?

I don’t quite follow... if a PI hires, mentors and supports a diverse group of students, what more is expected of them to meet the golden standard of diversity and inclusion?

Yep, you missed the point. The "gold standard" of diversity and inclusion is not presence of underrepresented groups. It is being a true ally. What are you doing to ensure that space isn't toxic for them? Recruiting people to toxic spaces is harmful IMO.

I see the distinction. So beyond just hiring there are duties of a PI to provide support for their students. What diff are there between a supportive PI and an “ally”?

There is plenty of literature available on toxicity of academic environments for underrepresented groups. I encourage you to find it and read it. Your institution likely has some sort of diversity center. Contact them with questions. It isn't my job to teach you these things.
