One of the more interesting civil rights cases, Hamilton v. Alabama, held that calling blacks by their first names in court was a form of unlawful discrimination. People went all the way to SCOTUS for the right to formal courtesy, which has always stuck with me.

I wonder how the American custom of giving tips to service workers fits into this. It's an explicit endorsement of redistribution of wealth at the expense of respect. The Japanese famously consider tips to be insulting, like you think you are better than the service worker.
