as far as I know, there is no reason for anyone to believe that Derek intends anything beyond lolcow wrassling. if someone has evidence of more malicious plans than that, I haven't seen it

note that I still think Derek's behavior is somewhere in between poor taste and cruel, but I don't subscribe to "only ethical things are funny" that's just not how humor works I disapprove of this whole kerfuffle but I'm not going to pretend that it's not entertaining

so, there's morality and then there's threat modeling. I find the latter frame much more useful. if you're not willing to accept the risk of above, you should either quit Twitter or go full pseudonym. I'm seriously — trolling campaigns, or outrage mobs, are risks of Twitter usage

I find mobbing p distasteful, but afaict the worst case outcome for Matt is he turns out to not be a lawyer on Twitter, rather than he loses his livelihood in real life

I think the damage here is entirely self-inflicted. Like, let's assume he's been honest about everything and has described his real work history in offhand references etc., but has been using a pseudonym. Okay, then just say that? Whole thing is weird
