a bunch of people got really mad at me on somethingawful the other day for pointing out that actually, no, the air traffic controllers very specifically did not have the right to strike in 1981 honestly the entire idea of banning strike retaliation is some serious bullshit

lefty econ twitter is right that monopoly power is an extremely serious problem right now they are wrong because they think that firms are the ones with monopoly power and not unions

!!!! the employers aren't FORCED to become closed shops

the employees just say "pls agree to this, otherwise we'll strike". If the employer says "ok i submit to your demands" instead of firing them all, that's their problem.

anyway the correct answer is that anti-trust is good but should also apply to labor the rule for firms is that combinations have to have real economic synergy, not just market power. do the same to unions

no-one's FORCING the workers in any country to run their economy into the ground by making unreasonable demands...

the problem is that their unreasonable demands that hurt us benefit them immensely my favorite example is hawaii longshoremen which can and repeatedly have literally cut off food and medical supplies to the whole fucking state for a pay raise

this would be solved with multiple Longshore unions

my preference would be for there to be one for every longshoreman tbh

which means there would not be multiple, there would be zero, because we would replace them all with robots
