...it's reasonable to wonder about exactly what methods might be effective at gaining more representation in elected offices. I suspect duopoly and "big-tent" parties are more of the problem than anything else. parliamentary and coalitional systems do compromise better it seems

we get clear examples of this on culture-war issues like abortion. it's non-negotiable on either side, for the most part. asking a single political party to contain both sides of it has proved non-viable and I don't expect that can or should change.

but what if there was a third party that existed in the Bible Belt and aligned with the majority there on abortion (and other non-negotiable culture issues) but had completely different foreign policy and economic policy than the Republican party?

the bundling of culture-war issues with other policy issues has resulted in a truly unworkable political system. it's already past the breaking point but we still seem to have no recognizable way out because of the duopoly.

that's the theory behind the checks and balances, but in the absence of functioning government what we're getting instead is executive fiat and corporatocracy which seems worse in most respects
