i think there may be a significant divide between people who channel their pain toward others and people who direct it inward

when I was in high school, we had an advanced english class, and read a novel that took place in vietnam the teacher knew a vet who himself knew the author of the book, and invited him in to speak, and take questions from students

he was a very sharp guy, a little quiet and in retrospect I think reflective--being asked to talk about something that was just your life and now is HISTORY might inevitably do this

the first person to raise his hand was a guy I thought was kind of preppy--he wasn't really, we weren't that kind of school, but there was a class of kids who tried he asked kind of eagerly whether the vet had killed anyone in vietnam
