two kinds of stories (there are others) 1. stories about large things: where and why a culture exists 2. stories about personal things: where and why a person exists and what their role is suspicion is a culture may be characterized by prevalence of members of these sets

old stories can fall out of favor when the world changes new stories are unstable and take a long time to to become well-fit and ingrained most new stories are relatively bad

Hmm, as a former Midwesterner maybe you have some insight. How do you excise the tall poppy syndrome story from your narrative? I was reading Selene's HUN thread and struck by deep status anxiety stuff when thinking about how cool it sounded to attend.

On reflection I realized I could either oversell what I do/who I am or undersell it, and I always choose to undersell. The thought of making myself sound better than I am has a deep rooted fear attached which cripples accurate self assessment. Very irksome.

Oh interesting Hmm I tend to undersell too (I think) This is not necessarily bad as long as you don't do it disproportionately? I'm not entirely clear on what you're getting at but there are many stories about disparities in strength The trick is to make sure . . .
