Well afaik, it is possible to hire a lawyer, have them represent you at a bond hearing/arraignment/etc (assuming you're being held on something you can get bond for), get out and hire a new attorney.

As far as picking an attorney, it's definitely good to do some research ahead of time. Look for a former prosecutor or public defender. You want someone who has spent a decent time in court bc the relationships they formed w/the court will benefit you.

Something else that occured to me that might be useful to people: Try to familiarize yourself with the timeline of the courts *before* you ever need to know them.

Part of the dystopian feeling when you are first arrested is not knowing when you'll get a hearing and having no one to tell you. If you know the rules ahead of time, that helps.
