another aspect is that many people think they believe something until it’s put to the test and then they find they don’t believe it after all. for example how much effort or resources they’re willing to commit

but stake in terms of effort or resources (or even ones life) doesn’t seem to be enough to discriminate between ‘true’ belief and performed belief - one can become a Martyr by accident, and one can stay living because the sacrifice of life won’t move the cause forward
