I didn't learn phonics - phonics vs sight reading is a...very *heated* debate in education and the standard method is swapped every couple years/decades :P

I am involved in the education of two first graders right now. One has a solid phonics background and painstakingly sounds out new words. The other has a sight reading background and looks at the first/last letter, guesses based on context, and then gives up if incorrect.

I know that it *is* controversial. I have yet to see a reason why sight reading has significant support. My experience is painfully in favor of phonics.

interesting! I'm probably too much of an outlier wrt reading to base any endorsement of one or the other on my own experiences

anyways I was a very strong sight reader when I learned to read and still frequently can't pronounce words I've only read

The latter is true of anyone who reads widely. English has notoriously vague pronunciation rules depending on the language we mugged to acquire the words being read.
