Back in the 80s we'd go to the arcade and watch other kids drop quarters and play Missile Command, Miner 2049, Dig Dug, etc.

yeah. I did this. re: game guides and reviews in magazines etc but for the single player games we actually had (and many rentals), my older bro was usually the one watching me play them then I would yell at him because watching me play was "messing me up" (making me mess up)

It was Zelda for me. I think a big part of it was that the guides were written in a very personable, laid back style, and it simulated a conversation with a funny, cool, interested friend. Books as friends is so real.
