I’ve actually found that it’s very much the opposite. If you get a chance the documentary “Sound and Furry” explores the subject in great depth.

It’s very much centered around the destruction of language, loss of shared history, the whole “can you even love her if she’s not like you” argument rears it’s ugly. But the belief that deafness is basically a racial characteristic is found, promoted and believed by deaf people.

There are people that pretend to be deaf, and there are a lot of deaf people that advocate the way this guy does. It's sick. There was even a paper a little while ago arguing in favour of the concept of 'transabled' - getting surgery or otherwise purposely becoming disabled.
